why are these guys special?
they are the first popular 'oberkrainer' band. bandleader Slavko Avsenik and brother Vilko, from upper part of 'Gorenjska' ('Oberkrain' in German, 'Upper Carnolia' in English) of Slovenia sometime in the 1950s slowly formed what has been since known as the 'Oberkrainer' sound of music which has become a staple of alpine music, folk music, folk-pop music or whatever you like to call it, throughout Slovenia, Austria, Germany, Switzerland, and Austrians + Slovenians throughout the rest of the world. the band sold over 30 million records, earned 31 gold records, formed what has become to many 'Slovenian' music, with the most commercial success in Germany.
they took the style Slovenian folk music that was played in their area of Slovenia, modernized it, popularized it to the point of no return, and made their music accessible and poplar with all kinds of audiences, not just Slovenian people, with thousands of bands from around the world (primarily in Europe) playing this Slovenian 'oberkrainer' style of music ever since, continuing today among young people in such countries (Austria, southern Germany, Slovenia).
contrary to some people's belief, Avseniki ('the Avseniks') aren't from Germany, despite recording most of their 1000+ compositions in both Slovenian and German for both markets respectively, they are from Slovenia.
